10Elucidating the Semantic Web of Things for Making the Industry 4.0 Revolution a Success

Indeed, the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0) is focusing in the direction of automating various manufacturing technologies which include Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Industrial Internet of Things and Internet of Things (IoT). The Semantic Web and the Web of Things known together as the Semantic Web of Things (SWoT) have a very bright future in addressing the plethora of problems in realizing the vision of IR4.0. This chapter aims to compile the various advancements that significantly contribute to the area of SWoT in the realization of IR4.0. The outcome of this study would be an aggregation of different progressions that essentially add to the space of SWoT in the acknowledgement of IR4.0.

10.1. Introduction

Industry 4.0 was first discussed at the Hanover Fair. It was in 2012 that the team responsible for the attainment of the IR4.0 vision met the German Government and laid out a proposal for the computerization of the manufacturing business. It is an amalgamation of various technologies such as the IoT, CPS, smart factories and big data. As coined by Um (2019), Industry 4.0 is a integration of multiple technologies not limited to machines, field gadgets and CPS that are controlling each other freely. As per the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) at present, we are in the fourth revolution where the vision is to integrate ...
