I generally start performance troubleshooting by walking through the P.A.t.h. Checklist for a single JVM. If there are no obvious issues, then I will move on to an “Alien” system—one connected to the first JVM. With a more sophisticated toolset, like an Application Performance Monitoring solution, data from multiple systems collects in a single location and application, making the process a lot easier, although licensing can get pretty expensive.
