The period between development of both SVR3 and SunOS and the transition to SVR4 saw a substantial investment in both the filesystem framework within the kernel and the development of individual filesystems. The VFS/vnode architecture has proved to be immensely popular and has been ported in one way or another to most versions of UNIX. For further details of SVR4.0, Goodheart and Cox's book The Magic Garden Explained: The Internals of System V Release 4, An Open Systems Design [GOOD94] provides a detailed account of SVR4 kernel internals. For details on the File System Switch (FSS) architecture, Pate's book UNIX Internals—A Practical Approach [PATE96] is one of the few references.
