Please, always keep back-ups of your work. Hard drives do break, and months of work could be lost. Computer repair shops spend large amounts of time, and customers’ money, trying to recover information from defunct drives, and it’s not always possible. As back-up media is now so cheap, it’s not worth the risk.

There was a time when a whole office would back their work up every night to a two gigabyte hard drive, which seemed inexhaustible. Things have changed: programs and systems take up more room and, most importantly for the digital artist, cameras produce much larger files.
