There are four components of visual communication:
  • Visual cues

  • Coordinate systems

  • Measurement scales

  • Visual context

Visual Cues

Visual cues draw the viewer’s eyes to relationships or specific parts of a chart. These include placement, lines, shapes, and color. Visual cues need to be effective to ensure perception accuracy.

The order of the most accurately perceived visual cues is as follows:
  • Position is the most accurate.

  • Line properties (length, angle, and direction).

  • Shape properties (area and volume).

  • Color properties, saturation ...
