It is not often that seas and oceans, and the people traversing them for a variety of reasons form the focus of discussion. Post-colonial studies have, however, emphasised the central role that India played in its interaction with countries to its east and west. There is similarly an increasing interest in the contribution of shipping and maritime groups to the creation of trans-regional communities and cultures not just in the past, but also as these survive and adapt to the present.
