When Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister, a cholera epidemic swept through some of the jhuggi-jhonpdi (slum settlement) rehabilitation project areas, especially in East Delhi. The epidemic was traced to contaminated water from shallow tube wells through which water was supplied to these colonies. The cause of contamination was sewage generated by these colonies, where there was no arrangement for its disposal resulting in the pollution of groundwater.
