1章Web APIとは何か
本書はタイトルにもあるように、Web APIについて述べた書籍です。Web APIをどのように設計、運用すればより効果的なのか、ありがちな罠、落とし穴を避けるにはどういう点に気をつけなければいけないのか、ということを考えていくことが本書の目的となっています。とはいっても、「Web API」という定義は曖昧ですから、まずはじめに本書がターゲットとするWeb APIとはどんなものであるのか、ということをきちんと定義しておくことにします。
本書で言うところのWeb APIとは「HTTPプロトコルを利用してネットワーク越しに呼び出すAPI」です。APIとは“Application Programming Interface”の略で、ソフトウェアコンポーネントの外部インターフェイス、つまりは機能はわかってるけれどもその中身の実際の動作は詳しくわからない（知らなくてもよい）機能のカタマリを、外部から呼び出すための仕様のことを指します。プロトコルとしてHTTPを使うため、そのエンドポイントはURIによって指定されることになります。
定義を厳密にしようとするとやや複雑な言い回しになってしまいますが、簡単に言えばあるURIにアクセスすることで、サーバ側の情報を書き換えたり、サーバ側に置かれた情報を取得できたりすることができるウェブシステムで、プログラムからアクセスしてそのデータを機械的に利用するためのものです。
「機械的に」と書いたのは、これがブラウザを使って人間が直接アクセスすることを目的としたURIではないことを意味しています。たとえばTwitterはWeb APIを公開しており、これがTwitter普及の一因を作ったと言われていますが、特定のユーザーのタイムラインを取得するAPIは以下のようになっています。 ...
