An Agenda for Educators
Beth Grosso teaches fourth- and fifth-grade students at Central Elementary School in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada’s equivalent of Pittsburgh as the country’s historic steel capital. Central Elementary is a venerable institution, opened in 1853 as the first public school in Hamilton. It is housed in a grand, classical building with brown and gray stonework, featuring a tall central tower adorned with a beautiful clock. While the school population at inception was probably pretty homogeneous, it most certainly is not today. Its students, overall, speak at least thirty languages in their respective homes, and English is a second language for an overwhelming majority.
