Despite the fact that CEOs didn't indicate on the Heidrick & Struggles survey that their Senior Management Teams (SMTs) are broken, there is a constant pressure to somehow fix the current situation. The status quo seems unacceptable. It's a rare strategy offsite or management retreat that doesn't include at least one agenda item facilitated by a coach, trainer, psychologist, or organizational consultant. At the time this chapter was being written, a Google search for the phrase leadership team development returned 9,430,000 hits. An entire industry exists with the sole purpose of improving team effectiveness.
