CHAPTER 3

Trust

Trust each other again and again. When the trust level gets high enough, people transcend apparent limits, discovering new and awesome abilities for which they were previously unaware.

—David Armistead

Trust is one of the core foundations for team building. With trust, teams can go faster, soar higher, offer help when someone is falling behind, and achieve goals far beyond what any individual can do. Without trust, teams stagnate, cover their tracks, withhold information, form silos, and even sabotage their own members.

Although genuine trust is built in day-to-day interactions, trust-building games can help magnify this trust. These games are a useful diagnostic tool to discern the current level of trust within the group. In addition to diagnosis, you can use these games to identify what actions are necessary to build trust—and conversely, to figure out which actions quickly destroy it. The best definition of trust I have is: “Do what you say”—and these games will help your team do just that.
