4.1 Overview

The 5G architecture has gone through a major facelift compared to any of the previous mobile communications generations. Many new concepts will be introduced, from which the most significant ones are the network virtualization and edge computing, whereas the radio interface will be built newly via more advanced modulation schemes and advanced multi‐array intelligent antenna solutions.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) dictating the overall performance requirements that are finalized as of the end of 2017, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), defines the technical requirements for the evolution path from Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS)/high‐speed packet access (HSPA) and Long‐Term Evolution (LTE). The New Radio (NR) designed for 5G can support a variety of significantly more complex use cases and increased capacity required for complying with massive machine type communications, ultra‐low latency and significantly increased data throughput.

The 5G network architecture can be characterized as a service based. It refers to the ability of the network, wherever suitable, to present the architecture elements as network functions (NFs) offering their specialized services via interfaces of a common framework to any network functions that are permitted to make use of these provided services. Network Repository Functions (NRFs) have a special role in this architecture, as ...
