8.1 Overview
Cybersecurity – referring to threats and respective protection – is one of the most important topics in modern mobile communications. The increasing popularity of the smart devices has exploded the amount of malware that may lurk within apps, web pages and elsewhere in the code of both software and hardware of the devices, networks and systems. The current growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) business is also one of the potential targets of the vulnerability attacks.
This chapter presents special security aspects of 5G, giving first an overview on the current security up to 5G. This includes both internal and external threats.
The following sections go through the network security functions and elements. The 5G procedures and security processes are upgraded from previous systems, and there are plenty of new aspects within the network and in interoperable modes. This chapter thus also presents new key methods for security monitoring and enhanced Lawful Interception (LI).
Then, threats and protection in mobile communications, and specifically in 5G era, are discussed. This part deals with the security compromising trends that indicate the security breach types in 5G systems (5GS) and presents strategies for protection.
One of the foundations for the security of the mobile communications is related to the secure element (SE), so this chapter discusses the role of removable security elements and embedded SE in providing adequate 5G security. This part includes ...
