6Core Network
6.1 Overview
The 5G system is designed to offer optimal resources, security, capacity, and quality for a variety of use cases. To achieve this, 3GPP has specified enhanced and new network technologies that form different service components – pillars − for servicing these use cases.
Figure 6.1 presents these main components in the 5G, referred to as dimensions, as can be interpreted from 3GPP SMARTER terminology presented in 3GPP TR 22.891, Release 14, which details 74 feasibility studies on new services and markets technology enablers for 5G. These dimensions support a variety of use cases while some use cases rely on multiple dimensions.
Figure 6.1 The main 5G dimensions supporting a variety of use cases as interpreted from 3GPP TR 22.891 [1].
As depicted in Figure 6.1, the 5G dimensions are the enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), critical communications (CriC), and massive Internet of Things (mIoT), supported by vehicular communications (vehicle‐to‐vehicle [V2V] and its variants) and network operations.
The network operations dimension provides advanced means to operate the network relying on evolved self‐optimizing network (SON) principles. The automatization makes it possible to prepare the network for highly dynamic situations, as it provides the means to re‐dimension the capacity and coverage on demand and perform self‐healing and recover the network from faults. ...
