7Services and Applications
7.1 Overview
This chapter outlines expected services and application types for the 5G era. In addition to the enhanced functionalities serving smart devices and other equipment of consumers, 5G networks will be remarkably much more optimized for supporting extremely big amount of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The machine‐to‐machine type of communications are expected to seriously take off well before the first International Telecommunication Union (ITU)‐compliant 5G networks will appear in the markets, so there is a great need for tackling the challenging requirements of simultaneously connected devices – someday, there may be tens or hundreds of thousands of highly dynamic IoT devices in the field increasing the current signaling.
The following sections detail the expected 5G network procedures for supporting such a growing parallel communication. The network services need to cope with the requirements per each main category, i.e. building block of the 5G system. These can be generalized as follows:
- Evolved Multimedia Broadband communications (eMBB)
- Massive Internet of Things communications (mIoT)
- Critical communications (CriC)
- Network operations
- Vehicle‐to‐vehicle communications (V2V)
