Chapter 90. What Is a Security Champion?
Travis F. Felder
In today’s world of emerging technology, the challenge of delivering secure applications in Agile development environments is already a tall order for most enterprises. Just to make things a little more interesting, pair that with the shortage of cybersecurity staff and lack of security awareness on development teams. It should not take long for enterprises to identify the need for Security Champions to help close the gaps in their application security programs.
Not only are Security Champions best equipped to handle these challenges because of the knowledge and existing foundation of trust built from working within the development team, but these volunteers are also budget-friendly.
What Is a Security Champion?
Security Champions are volunteers that typically work within development teams as software engineers, software architects, QA engineers, or DevOps engineers. It is important for the Security Champion to sit within the development team because it allows them to easily liaison between development and security and be the voice of security.
Although the Security Champions are not expected to be subject matter experts on all things cybersecurity, they should know enough to answer basic questions and serve as a bridge between the cybersecurity and development teams.
