Chapter 6. Buying a Wi-Fi PDA

In this chapter

  • What is a handheld computer?

  • PDAs

  • Pocket PC OS and Palm OS

  • Handhelds that support Wi-Fi

Compared to a desktop computer, a laptop is lightweight. But you don't even have to lug a “lightweight” laptop to take advantage of Wi-Fi.

In this chapter, I'll take a look at the category of computing devices that are far smaller and lighter than laptop computers. These devices are sometimes called handheld computers, or Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs).

In this chapter I'll explain what handheld computers are good for, how they differ from one another, what they can't do so well, and what you should look out for when buying a PDA or Pocket PC to use with Wi-Fi.
