Chapter 6. Emerging Applications in Healthcare Using AI
Since the dawn of man, technology has decreased the work burden on humans while driving efficiencies to free people to pursue other interests. General purpose technologies, which impact economies and societies, continue to make the biggest impact on all industries, including healthcare. Electricity, electronics, mechanization, the automobile, the computer, medicine, the internet, and now AI are examples of general purpose technologies (GPTs), and they were/are all game changers. They are ubiquitous; they are building blocks for continuous innovation; and ultimately their goal is to improve the way people live. AI is a general purpose technology and affords societies the same opportunity to improve healthcare.
One could describe our healthcare system as a sick care system in which care delivery hasn’t changed much in recent decades. When someone gets sick or doesn’t feel well, they visit their primary care physician, or they make an appointment with a specialist, or they even go diagnosis hunting via internet searches or their favorite health apps. An appointment is made with a clinician, tests are ordered and performed, and treatment follows. This takes time and produces inconsistent results.
