Chapter 1

Organization

The reporting org chart isn’t the influence org chart

Getting to know your organization will help you better identify your stakeholders and will provide context to your interactions with them. How the organization is structured, who influences decisions, and how the decision culture operates all inform your efforts at driving alignment. As our product manager protagonist, Irie,* tries to navigate her new org, we will discuss how to hone some key skills:

  • Use different organizational structures to foster more effective stakeholder interaction.
  • Understand the difference between the reporting org chart and the influence org chart by identifying Power Players and hidden Power Players.
  • Use the Power/Alignment Grid to decide how to move different types of stakeholders into alignment.
  • Approach stakeholders differently based on the predominant decision-making culture.
  • Design an optimal decision-making authority structure using DACI.

Let’s begin by following along as our product manager hero, Irie, learns about the new company she’s just joined.
