Just as vital as an understanding of the underlying principles of conservation, is an understanding of how those principles are transferred into practice. Architects who work on historic buildings need to know how legislation and government policy applies to heritage assets if they are to advise clients correctly.

In this chapter we consider government policy that exists in legislation, while in the next chapter we discuss the current designation system and legislative framework in more detail.
