Chapter 5Heritage Designation and the Legislative Framework

This chapter looks at the how heritage assets are designated, the legislation which protects them and the consents or permissions needed to carry out any building work.

Just as there are many different types of heritage asset, there are many different forms of protection specified by the law. All seek to control whether heritage assets can be adapted, changed or demolished. The different forms of designation used are:

  • Scheduled monuments and areas of archaeological importance
  • Listed buildings
  • Buildings of local interest
  • Conservation areas
  • Historic parks and gardens
  • Historic battlefields
  • World heritage sites.
