2.3. Stage 3

2.3.1. Correcting over-exposures

As you can see, the center of the right-hand table, which straddles a pair of photographs, is too bright. So I took two sets of photographs: the first was exposed normally, like the rest of the series, and the second was under-exposed by almost two f-stops.

Don't under-expose the second photograph too much. If you do, the final result won't look realistic.

Using Photoshop and its layer masks, I now began the preliminary work of superimposing the under-exposed photograph on top of the normally exposed one to produce a picture that I could insert in the panoramic series.

I opened the first set of two images—the first correctly exposed, the second under-exposed. I selected the second one (Ctrl-A) and copied it (Ctrl-C).

I then selected the first picture and placed the copy on top of it (Ctrl-V). The Layers palette now showed the under-exposed picture on top of my background picture. Until I changed the opacity of this upper layer, the background remained completely hidden.
