Christophe Noël

Artist, photographer

Originally trained as a mechanic, Christophe Noël sailed on the Marion Dufresne in 1998 to spend a year of military service in the Kerguelen Islands, in the southern Indian Ocean. He taught himself photography there, and decided to change careers when he got home to France. In 2000, he enrolled at the IRIS Center in Paris, studying photojournalism and studio photography. He then worked as a photographer's assistant for the Hachette Filipacci group and as a portrait photographer for the Opale agency. In 2003, at age 27, he exhibited some of his work in a photography project for the Seine-Saint-Denis regional council. Today, Noël creates self-portraits and settings for works of fiction in video performances and installations. He uses a 4 × 5-in. Sinar view camera and a 2 1/4 × 2 3/4-in. Mamiya, and creates his assemblies in Photoshop.
