In my first few years of music production, I worked as an engineer in a small commercial studio where I didn’t know what I’d be doing from one day to the next and had to just deal with projects as they arrived. Major-label bands often have the budget for them to write/experiment in the studio but sadly most bands do not have this luxury. As well as this, big commercial studios have studio managers whose job it is to make sure that expectations are handled, needs are met and the engineers/producers have everything they need.
