Chapter 2The Learning Discipline
Thomas spotted Leah at a café table by the window. The little shop had a distinct English vibe with deep gray-blue paneled walls and a painted ceiling adorned with antique chandeliers. The room's center framed the marble fireplace with two identical hunter-green tufted couches deep enough to get lost for an extended period of time. While the aroma filling the air was that of the finest freshly roasted coffee, ground and prepared to perfection with each cup, this café was known for its premium loose-leaf tea selection and service, one of only a few in the city.
As the server approached their table, it was immediately apparent that professionalism and kindness were deeply ingrained in the small café's ethos. Her long hair was pulled perfectly into a tight ponytail, allowing her bright smile and intentional eye contact to tell a story of care before any words were spoken. “It is wonderful to see you, Professor, “came the morning greeting. Shall I bring you the usual this morning?” she continued.
“Yes, Jaymi. That would be wonderful.” Leah replied with the level of comfort of two old friends having a conversation.
“And for your guest this morning?” Jaymi continued.
Leah glanced at Thomas, who had hung his bag over the chair and made himself comfortable. Still clearing the cobwebs from his brain, Thomas exclaimed, “Caffeine, please.”
