8.1 Background and Motivation

Sustainability is caring for the future generation while achieving the present economic goals. The world fraternity is now more concerned about the environment with or without stakeholder’s willingness, for example, introduction of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) legislation in the western part of the globe [1]. Environmental sustainability may be understood as responsible interaction with the environment to avoid depletion and degradation of natural resources for long‐term environmental quality. These days, customers are also more concern about their consumption habits and prefer products that are manufactured by producers who care for the environment. Since customers are taking into account the sustainability aspect in their purchase decisions, big brands are showcasing their environmentally friendly manufacturing practices they follow while manufacturing. However, the question is whether the same concept could become so powerful so as there could be the inclusion of new technologies like IoT and Big Data for achieving environmental sustainability. There are studies which explored the concept with a qualitative approach.
