Professor John Cacioppo of the University of Chicago has pioneered research into loneliness and the detrimental effect it has on the health of individuals. His work has led the academic world into believing lonely people not only suffer higher levels of depression but also experience higher stress levels in their lives, putting enormous pressure on their physical health. It stands to reason that humans need contact with other humans as much as they need food, oxygen and water. Loneliness might take longer to take grip, but the slow burn can mete out similar harm. At some stage in the not too distant future you can imagine that a coroner might diagnose a person’s cause of death as loneliness.
