Chapter 2. Setting Up the 580EX II and 430EX II Speedlites

This chapter aims to provide more information about getting your Speedlites set up for on-camera use and off-camera wireless operation. I discuss some finer details of the Speedlite's features and capabilities, briefly explain the optional flash exposure modes, and offer tables that list all the Custom Functions that are available with the 580EX II and 430EX II and suggestions when you might use them.

By the end of this chapter, you should feel more comfortable accessing the various menus of the flash modes and setting Custom Functions for your flash. This is key to making on-the-fly decisions and gaining some insight into reading certain shooting environments and situations where you may want to avoid using the fully automatic settings. Creative lighting and intuitive use of your gear are your goals, so let's get started!

Setting Up the 580EX II and 430EX II Speedlites

This portrait of business consultant Laura Schlafly was shot in the lobby of her office building with just two Speedlites, a 580EX II and the older 580EX, both triggered wirelessly by the ST-E2 transmitter. The main light is fired through a small white translucent umbrella camera-right, and the undiffused edge light, camera-left is dialed down-2 stops on the ST-E2 transmitter. Exposure: ISO 400, f/5, 1/50 second with an EF 70–200mm f/2.8L USM lens.
