Direct sunlight is the quality of light you can expect on a bright sunny day. This quality of light, normally present in the middle of the day, creates a hard and harsh quality of light, which delivers pronounced shadows. It’s not an ideal light for shooting portraits, because of the shadows it produces on the face, but it is a great light for creating graphic imagery emphasizing shapes, lines, and texture.
