Black-and-White Conversion
There are a wide variety of ways to convert a color file into a black-and-white image. Black-and-white conversion is a hotly debated topic—many photographers believe that some methods are infinitely better than others.
That said, the initial conversion isn’t what’s important to me—it’s the process of selectively lightening and darkening the image that matters. Referred to commonly as dodging and burning, these terms refer to the techniques practiced in a traditional darkroom, where more or less light would be allowed to make contact with the paper, thus, lightening or darkening specific areas of the print.
