The “cloud” began as the space between the user and the provider, a new “computing paradigm, where the boundaries of computing will be determined by economic rationale, rather than technical limits alone,” according to Ramnath K. Chellappa. In other words, cloud computing promised to make computing power a commodity, replacing the paradigm of custom-built computing, storage, and network solutions common at the time.
