So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Für ein COBOL-Programm muss man sehr viel Text schreiben. Nicht umsonst wird diese Programmiersprache auch als geschwätzig bezeichnet. Es kommt auch oft vor, dass man die Definition von Datensätzen in verschiedenen COBOL-Programmen benötigt und sicher sein muss, dass sie überall identisch ist.
In COBOL gibt es keine gekapselten Klassendefinitionen, auf die man sich an jeder beliebigen Stelle beziehen kann. Aus diesen Gründen legen COBOL-Programmierer sehr gerne kleine Textdateien an, die nur einen Ausschnitt aus einem COBOL-Programm beinhalten.
