Kapitel 18: COBOL und Datenbanken (IMS, SQL)
In den bisherigen Kapiteln wurden die Definitionen und Befehle der Programmiersprache COBOL beschrieben. Dieses Kapitel zeigt, wie man von COBOL aus auf Datenbanksysteme zugreift. Wegen der festen Satzstrukturen und eines vorgegebenen Satzes an Befehlen sind hier einige Besonderheiten zu beachten.
Den Anfang macht das hierarchische Datenbanksystem IMS. Es ist deutlich älter als die SQL-Datenbank DB2, aber immer noch hier und da im Einsatz. Der Fokus dieses Buches liegt dabei auf der Beschreibung, wie man Datenbankzugriffe in COBOL realisiert, dennoch wird es einen kurzen Exkurs über Aufbau und Arbeitsweise von IMS geben, ohne dem die Erklärungen sonst nur schwer verständlich sein würden.
