
Preface
The term computer science covers a very large range of studies and, like so
many other technical subjects, is expanding faster than textbooks can be
updated. It is not surprising, then, that many textbooks on this subject are
very large and out of date, some of them barely mentioning the use of
desktop computers. What is surprising is that very little is available to
introduce the subject to the wider range of readers, students, enthusiasts and
users of computers who want or need to know more about the subject. In
particular, there is little available for the student on courses such as the C&G
