Sound signals that can be used by an amplifier and loudspeaker consist of
electrical signals that have been produced by a digital to analogue converter,
the opposite of the A-D converter. For each digital number input, the D-A
converter will generate an electrical wave whose frequency (corresponding
to the sensation of pitch) is controlled by the digital number. A simpler
method is to use digital numbers simply to control the electrical signals
(square waves) that exist in the computer, and many computers contain a
