So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

A camera is an amazing piece of engineering because whether it is a $5,000 dedicated device with multiple interchangeable lenses and settings or a component of a $99 mobile phone, it is still just a box with a hole that lets in light. Cameras are produced for a variety of purposes, yet they all do the same basic thing: Record an image of the scene in front of them.
The aim of this chapter is to help you learn enough about photography so you can make the kind of photographs you envision. This chapter reviews the technical aspects of cameras, introduces you to image composition and advises you on how best to tell stories visually.
