In this chapter, we look at how the criminal justice system is using Big Data, algorithms, and artificial intelligence to investigate and prosecute crimes. Big Data is used to train algorithms that help professionals in law enforcement make decisions. The police, the courts, and correctional institutions have embraced algorithms. They promise a more efficient and impartial means of accomplishing the goals they have as institutions. However, these new technologies are not beyond criticism. Many advocacy groups question the use of algorithms and allege that they are violating civil liberties and can be biased against minority groups.
