12Privileged Access Management and Administrative Control
Privileged access is the thin layer between routine operations and irreversible impact, because it governs the identities and actions that can change how the environment works. When privilege is misassigned, overused, or poorly monitored, a single compromised session can disable defenses, reshape access, and undermine the integrity of evidence before responders even understand what is happening. Effective privileged access management is therefore less about restricting administrators and more about making high‐impact work deliberate, attributable, time‐bound, and recoverable under stress. This chapter establishes why privilege is uniquely dangerous and then builds the operational discipline required to define privileged roles and actions, enforce approvals and emergency pathways, monitor privileged sessions and non‐human identities, and collect audit‐quality evidence—while using AI‐assisted detection as decision support with clear human override controls.
Why Privilege Is the Highest‐Risk Access Category
Privilege is the highest‐risk access category because it collapses multiple security boundaries into a single decision point: whether an action is permitted. When an identity is granted administrative rights, the environment is effectively trusting that identity to bypass normal guardrails, change configurations, access sensitive data, and influence other identities. In practical terms, privileged access converts many ...
