28Cloud and Hybrid Security Foundations
Cloud and hybrid security succeed or fail based on whether defensive teams can operate at the speed and abstraction of modern infrastructure without losing control of identity, configuration, and evidence. The core challenge is not that cloud is “different,” but that the control plane turns routine administrative actions into high‐impact security events and amplifies small mistakes into large blast radius. Effective blue team operations in this space depend on making ownership explicit, instrumenting visibility as reliable infrastructure, and enforcing consistent guardrails across accounts, regions, and interconnected on‐prem environments. When those foundations are in place, teams can detect and contain identity abuse and misconfiguration‐driven exposure quickly, validate posture continuously at scale, and apply AI‐assisted prioritization without surrendering accountability.
Understanding Cloud Security Basics
Cloud security starts with accepting that the environment is intentionally abstracted and shared. What you control is not “the cloud” in general, but a defined slice of responsibility that sits on top of a provider's infrastructure, services, and operational processes. This shared responsibility model is not a slogan; it is the boundary that determines which failures become your incident and which become a vendor ticket. In practice, most real‐world breakdowns happen in the seams—misunderstood defaults, unclear ownership, and ...
