20Detection Engineering and Anomaly Detection
Detection engineering and anomaly detection are most effective when treated as a managed capability with explicit ownership, measurable performance, and disciplined maintenance rather than as an ever‐growing collection of rules. High‐quality detections are built from real threat behaviors and grounded in dependable telemetry, with tuning and validation practices that reduce false positives without creating silent blind spots. Because environments change continuously, detection logic must be documented, versioned, and governed so that breakage is detected quickly, fixes are auditable, and coverage gaps are tracked as managed risk rather than discovered during crises. AI/ML can amplify this work by prioritizing signals, clustering patterns, and summarizing context, but only when drift is managed, outputs are explainable, and human approval boundaries prevent false confidence from turning automation into unchecked authority.
Detection as a Managed Capability
Treat detection as a managed capability rather than a collection of rules because the organization is ultimately buying outcomes: faster discovery, lower blast radius, and fewer surprises. That requires a clear service boundary that distinguishes detection engineering from incident response, threat intelligence, and platform administration while still integrating with each of them. A managed capability has defined customers, measurable performance, and explicit operating constraints ...
