There are several families of audio processing algorithms that use nonlinear processing as part of their effect. These include the following.
- solid state distortion, overdrive and fuzz emulators
- vacuum tube amplifier simulation
- simulations of analog filters that are designed with transistors or other nonlinear devices (e.g. Moog or Korg35 low-pass filters)
- high frequency “exciters” and enhancers
- ring modulation (linear processing with nonlinear output)
