Chapter 19Nonlinear Processing: Distortion, Tube Simulation, and HF Exciters

There are several families of audio processing algorithms that use nonlinear processing as part of their effect. These include the following.

  • solid state distortion, overdrive and fuzz emulators
  • vacuum tube amplifier simulation
  • simulations of analog filters that are designed with transistors or other nonlinear devices (e.g. Moog or Korg35 low-pass filters)
  • high frequency “exciters” and enhancers
  • ring modulation (linear processing with nonlinear output)
