Chapter 20FFT Processing: The Phase Vocoder

Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier was born in 1768 in France. Euler was 61 years old (and would live another 15 years) and Sir Isaac Newton had died only 42 years prior. To put that into a more musical context, Mozart was 12 years old when Fourier arrived, and wrote his seventh and eighth symphonies that same year. Europe was in a period now known as the Age of Enlightenment. Given that we still use Fourier’s original theories as the basis for solving problems in engineering and mathematics as well as the other hard sciences like biology and chemistry, we are currently still reaping the rewards of that period of time, and perhaps are still going through some form of enlightenment.
