CHAPTER 19. The Salvo real-time operating system
All the concepts introduced about the RTOS (real-time operating system) in Chapter 18
are theoretical niceties unless we can apply them to a working system. Preferably, this should be one that can be run on a PIC-based embedded system. Our chance to do this comes with Salvo – ‘the RTOS that runs in tiny places’. Salvo is a commercially available RTOS specially intended for the small embedded system, with a version which works with the Microchip C18 compiler. Best of all, there is a free Salvo Lite version! This gives us the opportunity to enter the exciting yet challenging world of the RTOS, and, without too much trouble, to write simple, illustrative and working programs.
