In addition to taking steps to attract and recruit qualified individuals with disabilities, employers should review their policies and processes across the employment ribbon or process to determine whether they facilitate or impede the hiring, retention, and advancement of qualified adults with disabilities.
Policies and processes that can support the hiring and retention of employees with disabilities include:
- Reasonable Accommodations
- Qualification Standards
- Job Announcements (to whom they are being distributed and their digital accessibility)
- Career Development and Advancement
- Retention/Promotion
Let's examine each of these within a framework that is comprehensive and yet flexible for employers of any size to use.
Reasonable Accommodations
For all employers, it is important to have a central and clear process for requesting accommodations that is readily accessible to applicants on your recruiting website and in the employee portal for existing employees. Two assumptions are made here: (1) Employers will make reasonable accommodations for all employees because employers are already doing this, and (2) employers should create a centralized accommodations fund to pay for accommodations that otherwise become a factor in a hiring supervisor's decision as to whether they can afford even the de minimis costs of an accommodation.
