It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

The best way to learn about documentary editing is to edit a documentary. Nothing substitutes for the trial-and-error process of putting a film together, especially if you have talented mentors who are willing to give constructive criticism. But you can also learn a great deal by watching and analyzing finished films, so in this section we will break down several of them in detail to see how they work. Chapter 16, brand new in the second edition, breaks down many of the conventions of the short documentary and shows the editing logic behind five short docs.
