I want to make a prediction, and I like to think it is not too far off the mark.
It is 2020. The world has continued its technological upswing, but the pace of change has slowed somewhat due to the diminishing returns that innovation is providing. People are settling into a lifestyle that relies increasingly upon technology, but much of it has become relatively invisible to them.
Software is, of course, everywhere. It is in our televisions and toasters, in our cell phones and sliding-glass doors. Maybe it is in our shoelaces. And all of this software has been created by professionals.
