HCI is the study of people, computer technology, and the ways these influence each other. In practice, HCI involves the design, evaluation, and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use. The discipline has its early roots in studies of human performance in manufacturing industries. Human factors, or ergonomics, originally attempted to maximize worker productivity by designing equipment to reduce operator fatigue and discomfort.
