Chapter 12
In this chapter we will consider some of the fundamental concepts, definitions and principles that underpin the study of thermodynamics and fluids, most of which you will probably have met before. We start by considering some very important thermo-fluid parameters, including density, pressure and its measurement, temperature and its measurement and linear expansion. We then discuss the nature of heat, in particular, specific heat and latent heat. Finally, we look at the expansion and contraction of gases and the use of the gas laws, including the two forms of the characteristic gas equation.
