In this chapter we cover the ideas and concepts associated with thermodynamic systems. In particular, we start with some basic definitions and look at the properties that help to define the state of the system. We then look at closed and open systems and the application of the first law of thermodynamics to these systems. Next, we consider the transfer of work, energy and power in and out of the system, using the non-flow (NFEE) and the steady flow (SFEE) energy equations, and introduce the idea of enthalpy and specific enthalpy of the working fluid in open systems. Finally, we look briefly at the second law of thermodynamics in terms of the direct acting and reverse acting heat engine and its use as a measure ...
