In the second scenario, we evaluated the risk of infection for a person who spends
12 hours in a bedroom adjacent to a second bedroom occupied by an individual in-
fected with infl uenza. This scenario is representative of many residential confi gura-
tions including children who normally sleep in separate bedrooms or two children who
normally share a bedroom but are separated temporarily when one of them has a chest
cold. In this scenario, the risk of infl uenza infection for a 12-hour exposure for an oc-
cupant in the adjacent bedroom was approximately 16% with conventional fi ltration,
